THREADS across the Four Components: ACGME Competency Areas and Areas for Greater Emphasis

Where can I Find X, Y or Z?

SPECIFIC SUGGESTIONS for use of the FOUR COMPONENTS OTHER Tools and Resource

Patient Safety and Quality Improvement

Within the ACGME competency of Practice-based Learning and Improvement are contained many elements of safety and quality improvement.

For example, at the preclerkship level, within the Collaborative Curriculum Project's preclerkship "Competency-based Curriculum Resource for Pre-Clerkship Education (using ACGME Structure)" accessible via http://fammed.musc.edu/fmc/data/Preclerkship/ within the competency file on Practice-based Learning and Improvement , the following are suggested for the preclerkship student:

Demonstrate commitment to personal role in improving healthcare outcomes.

  • Describe the concept of a paradigm shift in physician responsibility (from apprenticeship model to continuous improvement.)
  • Give examples of clinical problems for which outcomes can be changed through process improvement.
  • Contrast the benefits of team-based process improvement vs. physician sanctions for error in improving health outcomes.

At the family medicine clerkship level, another example can be found within the topic of   Immunizations http://fammed.musc.edu/fmc/data/Immunizations.htm under the PBLI competency:

GOAL: Students will discuss benefits and risks of vaccines with patients and parents of patients clearly and sensitively.

OBJECTIVES: The student will be able to:

  • Provide / discuss vaccine risk-benefit information to patients and parents of patients when offering vaccinations (e.g., provision of the CDC Vaccine Information Statements from http://www.cdc.gov/nip/publications/VIS/default.htm)
  • Describe the importance of preventing vaccine preventable diseases.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and parents that have worries or concerns about the use of vaccinations.
