SPECIFIC SUGGESTIONS for use of the FOUR COMPONENTS OTHER Tools and Resource

Life-long learning, self-awareness

Among the six areas identified by the FMCR's CCP in the Areas for Greater Emphasis document re: the preclerkship education of all medical students is Life-long learning and self-awareness .   Recommendations with regard to why this is important and how to access this can be located at http://fammed.musc.edu/fmc/data/Preclerkship/

Taking this thread further into the other components of the FMCR resource, one can delve into what is suggested within the various resources around the ACGME Competency of Professionalism.     For example, within the broad goals and objectives for the family medicine clerkship, the following are suggested under the larger ACGME Competency of professionalism (accessible at http://fammed.musc.edu/fmc/data/ACGME_Themes.htm ). Within this list are many aspects of life-long learning and self-awareness.

  • Describe the importance of maintaining continuing professional responsibility for the patient's and family's healthcare.
  • Demonstrate respect for patients and families in the referral and consultation process.
  • Perform concise, problem-focused presentation of patient that reflects critical thinking in clinical decision making.
  • Demonstrate respect for patient confidentiality and privacy regulations.
  • Avoid imposing personal values by using non-directive counseling when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate respect for patients whose lifestyles and values may be different from your own.
  • Recognize limits of own knowledge.

Within special topics , such as geriatrics , there are contained student goals and objectives under the ACGME competency of Professionalism centered around self-awareness of one's own developmental stage in life and one's own attitudes about aging and the elderly.

An example from the geriatrics resource, http://fammed.musc.edu/fmc/data/Geriatrics.htm a student should be able to:

  • Describe the various myths and stereotypes related to older people, recognizing their impact can adversely affect optimal care of elderly patients; be aware of their own attitudes about aging, disability and death.
