THREADS across the Four Components: ACGME Competency Areas and Areas for Greater Emphasis

Where can I Find X, Y or Z?

SPECIFIC SUGGESTIONS for use of the FOUR COMPONENTS OTHER Tools and Resource

Community theme

The Family Medicine Clerkship page contains broadly defined student objectives for the family medicine clerkship which are indexed by the six ACGME Competencies and three themes of the family medicine clerkship

http://fammed.musc.edu/fmc/data/ACGME_Themes.htm

One of the three themes for the family medicine clerkship is Community and Population Medicine.   So, for example, within the ACGME Competency of Systems-based Practice the student objectives for the family medicine clerkship around the theme of Community and Population medicine are:

  • Analyze the health of a community, using census, vital statistics,   public health data and other appropriate sources of data.
  • Describe methods of controlling health care costs and allocating resources that do not compromise quality of care.

The actual venue for teaching these themes lies primarily within the commonly taught topics within a family medicine clerkship, and often within the larger ACGME competencies. The Family Medicine Clerkship site contains such a resource for 29 topics.   To take this general theme above to the more specific level, then, taking, for example, the topic of domestic violence at http://fammed.musc.edu/fmc/data/Domestic_Violence.htm and drawing on the competencies suggested within Systems-based care for that topic, the following specific goals and objectives are suggested:

GOAL: Students understand the impact of domestic violence on patients, a practice and a community, recognizing it as a healthcare issue.

OBJECTIVES: The student will be able to:

  • Outline the physician's role in promoting activities to address prevention with populations at risk (e.g., child witnesses, pregnant women, and dependent-frail elderly).
  • Know appropriate methods for collection and documentation of evidence so that both the patient and the provider are protected.
